My Favorite Moments From the MTV 2011 VMAs

So I have a bit of beef with last night's VMAs but since being negative is not my nature, I'm going to discuss my five favorite moments of the night and refrain from any negativity. (Talk about torture.)

1. Whomever's idea it was to bring Cloris Leachman should have a pleather of muffin baskets on his/her desk in the morning. First of all, what was she doing there? From not talking in the microphone, fumbling her words and even making a salty hand signal behind ~~Sir~~ Lady Gaga's back, she stole the night. Kudos for making retirement seem cool, MTV. You've found your new demographic.

2. Ummm... BEYONCE is pregnant? The 29-year-old announced in a rather not-so-subtle way that she was with child both on the black carpet and during her performance. Whether or not dropping the microphone to show her stomach was truly necessary is debatable.

3. Adele was flawless in her performance of "Someone Like You." Despite being robbed of not a single Moon Man last night, she still walked away proud with undoubtedly the strongest act of the night (and an equally pissed off ex-boyfriend).

4. Speaking of performances, I LOVED every one of Jessie J's throughout the evening. Forget about the foot injury, she sang her ass off, covering songs like "Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun," "Firework" and "F*** You."(Check out my post on her cover of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody")

5. Finally, I thought the Amy Winehouse tribute was well timed, respectful and an overall a beautiful way to honor the the late British singer. Tony Bennett's video of his duet was definitely the somber moment of the night with Winehouse to Bruno Mars' performance of "Valarie," really reminding us what a great talent was lost.

Artist of the Week: Maria Taylor

I'm usually pretty positive with my artist reviews but I'm a bit hesitant to discuss the latest from Maria Taylor. The first single off of her new album Overlook, "In a Bad Way" has me worried to hear the other tracks off of the album, which is available for download tomorrow. Maybe it's just that I'm used to her lighter, more moody tracks from her earlier albums. I think she's best going steady with the acoustic route. (Seriously. Lynn Tweet Flowers is amazing!) I think it's just the opening electric guitar strum on this new track that's not jiving with me. Take a listen for yourself below.

I really want to like it but I think this is her attempt to go more mainstream. I guess I'll have to wait to hear the rest of the album with you tomorrow.

Artist of the Week: Fink

I am often asked, "who's your favorite artist?" While I admit, it's pretty hard to select just one and I usually result in naming about seven, undoubtedly Fink is always listed. The English DJ turned musician is known for his raspy voice matched organically with guitar chords and soft beats, seamlessly combining a raw and vulnerable pairing together. He released his latest album Perfect Darkness a few weeks ago and I bet I could probably sing each one by now. (Well, at least attempt to sing.)

The title track off his fourth album Sort of Revolution I can say with certainty is one of my true favorites. (Check out the video below)

Weekly Read: INK Magazine's Heat Issue

In addition to blogging about music, I'm rather obsessed with all things design orientated, particularly print work. Whether it be books, magazines or even advertisements, I always get inspired and instantly start working on a project. So when I came across the online design publication mecca known as Issuu a few years back, it was like striking gold.

I've been following the culture quarterly INK Magazine since 2009 and it's amazing to look back to where they began. With the mission to "discover the undiscovered, reveal the unrevealed and promote the under-promoted in all things art, fashion and photography," INK Magzine is the perfect supplement to dive into. In their latest installment, apporpriately titled for summer "The Heat Issue," the team breaks down this season's wardrobe basics, reviews an extensive list of alternative albums, takes a look behind the cover of a new book by Of Montreal's David Barnes as well as shares their recently added INK Magazine Homme division, beginning on page 160.

Known for his elemental voice and occasionally rapping over rock tracks, singer/songwriter Mat Kearney is back with his fourth album, Young Love. His single, "Hey Mama" has been playing on airwaves across the country before his record drops tomorrow. (Watch the video for "Hey Mama" below)

Honestly, I was a bit disturbed when I realized I've never posted about Mat before. He's been in my playlists for years and is one of the few artists I've found that actually make singing their a** off sound effortless. If you don't recognize him by name, chances are you've heard at least one of his songs on television shows like 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights and Bones. Most recently, he toured with Keane to promote his album City of Black & White.

While I was gone, I did some much needed site maintenance. I improved the internal interface, redefined categories, overhauled the layout and that's just the beginning. I'm so excited to share new content with you each day and introduce you to a new musicians, great entertainment and provide a different perspective on design. 'The Social Network' Defines a Generation

On Friday, I attended an opening night showing of the highly anticipated film The Social Network, directed by David Fincher. As I sat down in the theatre, I pulled out my Blackberry, ready to update my status, but thought otherwise.

During this movie, I would ignore texts, emails, BBMs and any other communication and simply focus on the movie as if it was 2004, before the brain of online networking became a reality.

The dark, ominous color palette and immediate emphasis on rush acceptance made me believe I was watching Dead Poets Society: The College Years. With it’s dictated rugby flavor, reminiscent of a Ralph Lauren campaign, I felt insubordinate watching these Ivy League students grope each other over spilt beers.

As it’s not my intention to expose the movie’s plot, I do think it is part of my social responsibility to inform you of some key points. Stating that I enjoyed the movie would be underselling my opinion.

It was intellectual, witty and cleverly written, which leads me to my next point: the vernacular of the movie was entirely over embellished. I feel pretty confident that not every college student speaks in such a way that would rival a poem by Maya Angelo, but then again, not every student is a Harvard student.

I won’t pretend to imply that enrolling in Harvard would be less than honorable (after all, it’s the school of choice for every student in the United States). But I question whether I really needed Harvard school spirit drilled in my mind for two hours of my life.

Regardless, the movie’s agenda was to question friendship and how society has overvalued an acquaintance with the title of “friend.” It glorified geeks as badasses, while simultaneously portraying them as the scapegoats of postmodern American capitalism.

It is the plot of this movie that addresses why we no longer have the time to share information with friends verbally, as opposed to clicking a button to notify them.

We’ve compressed ourselves into 140 character messages, instead of expressing our full thoughts freely. I highly recommend you see this film at least once. There is an important message we should all remember: a chicken doesn’t eat a chicken.

Music Video Monday: Cosmic Love

About a month ago, I came across Florence + The Machines while scouring through blogs for design inspiration and was more intrigued by the melodies than anything else on the page. For a few days, I felt like this was my new gem... my favorite "new white shirt" that fit me and my ever changing style just perfectly. Then, I hear Dog Days Are Over on not one but two commercials within about twenty minutes of each other. Needless to say, the Eat, Pray, Love trailer wiped spaghetti sauce all over my "new white shirt." Awesome.

So while I try to take this stain out, here is a video for Cosmic Love which I'm still obsessing over.

Music Video Monday: Take a Bow

I know I've featured Greg Laswell several times on the blog before but I can't help myself from doing it again. Did you hear his song, Goodbye, on the season finale of Grey's last week? What am I typing?! I know you did. (And by the way, didn't that deliver like Dominos?! I mean, by the end I wish I had that catheter they hooked up to Mandy Moore. Nevertheless, it was still fantastic writing and a stellar show. Bravo. But back to Greg.)

I've been a fan of Greg for years now. I have a ton of his songs, follow him on Twitter and Facebook, I even receive his newsletter (which you can sign up for via his website) to keep me in the know about his latest projects. Are you beginning to believe I have a bromance with Greg? If not, read the last 6 words of the previous sentence. It's pretty simple.

A few weeks back iTunes posted his video "Take Everything" as their Free Video of the Week so, of course, I downloaded it. I think I've probably watched it like 50 times already. Yea, I wasn't kidding about my bromantic feelings. (Wait. Bromantic? Did I really just say that?Dammit.) I consider myself a blend of many things that don't define who I am but rather stimulate my personality and demeanor. With that said, I do have a confession. I'm pretty much a Gleek. I believe it is some sort of viral infection that doctors can't find a cure for and that's fine with me. I'll be the first to admit, Glee is to me what a cocaine is to an animalistic junkie, and I'm okay with that.

Now this isn't a spoiler post about last night's episode so not to worry. I was just curious to see if any of you were fellow Gleeks or also enjoy the show? I'm beginning to think that discussing the series and films I think are interesting might be a great step in one of many "new directions." Get it?! (Forgive me)

Book of the Month: Official Book Club Selection

Alright. Before you say anything, I know I'm long overdue for discussing this stellar piece of literature. Believe it or not, I actually pre-ordered the book online before it's release date last year and began reading it the minute I got it. Of course, I had the intention to finish it as soon as possible but now here I am... almost a year later and I still have a few more chapters to go.

As a die hard fan of Ms. Kathy Griffin, I'm welling up inside almost as much as I did during last year's season finale of the Real Housewives of New Jersey. So in an attempt to put my emotion's at ease, I decided to finish this memoir as soon as possible. For those of you who don't own Official Book Club Selection, here is the D-Lister herself dishing about he book.

Man it's fantastic to be blogging again! I'm really excited to be bringing you new content so keep checking back and leave your comments. I love to hear what each of you is thinking.

Now, I’m gonna be honest, when I first heard the name of this band I thought of a burger, which I believe is a result of my pescaterian lifestyle. But the sound of Angus & Julia Stone is so refreshing for a relaxing afternoon I couldn’t go any longer without sharing them with you. (Not to mention they won't leave you with a heavy feeling in your stomach after digesting like a regular burger.) Below I selected their music video, "Just a Boy", from their latest album, Down the Way. This brother and sister duo from down under packs a wallop in their quiet melodies that hits me like a kangaroo kick to the gut so prepare yourself. They're kinda like my new favorite group. What would you do if you were asked to change your name after already establishing a fan base? Well that's exactly what Santigold, formerly Santogold, had to do in February of last year. (And no, that Killers reference was not intentional!)

This rising indie-rockstar has been making a name for herself with songs like L.E.S. Artistes and Creator. At first listen, you might think her sound is a bit peculiar and even a bit odd. But trust me, get into the music and you're going to really like what you hear.

If you saw yesterday's post, you can probably understand I'm a bit disoriented after the President and Vice President's visit to my campus. The whole week in fact has been a bit of a blur for me. Already a month into the semester and back at work for my college newspaper and my RA job, things have been non-stop here for me. I'm looking forward to this weekend and hope I have a little bit of time to relax. Next week is gonna be a long one I can tell already!

My Morning With the President & Vice President

While I don't normally like talking about myself, I had a rare and unique opportunity today that I will remember for the rest of my life. Today, both President Obama and Vice President Biden visited my campus, The University of Tampa to speak at a Town Hall Meeting. But it only gets better from here. I was one of about 20 students asked to join the leaders on stage during the event. I feel both honored and blessed to have been chosen and still can't believe what happened.

Unfortunately, due to my tall height, I was placed in the back ro

w on stage. While it was definitely NOT a bad seat by any means, my camera time was a bit limited. In case you missed the meeting, I've provided a link from C-SPAN here of the entire event. The iPad Has Arrived

For starters, you may have noticed that for the first time in over a YEAR I did not post on the blog yesterday. Due to some technical difficulties with my server and blogger, the site would not let me upload all afternoon. While I was a bit upset about the situation, I figured it was bound to happen at some point!

I've posted about singer/songwriter José González in the past but I never realized he was part of the band, Junip, until about a week ago. Jose's sound is very etherial and light, balancing eclectic guitar riffs and poised verses from one harmonious track to the next. Happy Weekend! Some very exciting things have been happening in my life this past week for which I am extremely excited for but still nervous about. Since I feel like there should be some division between my personal life and blog life, you'll just have to guess as to what I'm referring to! In the meantime, I hope you have a great weekend as I intend to.

In Thirty Minutes:

- Make yourself a fruit smoothie.

- Before you get out of bed, take a few minutes to stretch and reflect on the day ahead.

- When you're driving through the tool booth, pay twice for you and the car behind you.

In an Hour:

- Strike up a conversation with that co-worker you've been eyeing.

- Forget texting and call. While technology might make things easier I think verbal interaction is nicer than symbolic 160 word messages, no?

- Wake up an hour earlier. It might be hard the first day but if you make it a routine you'll be surprised how much more productive you'll become.

In an Afternoon:

- Check out Matthew Mayfield and Jon Black in Nashville on Sunday at 6pm. Click here for ticket information.

- Make your laundry list of To-Do items attainable by breaking down the list into smaller tasks.

- Avoid even the whitest of lies and be genuine with yourself and others.

I stumbled across Travis this afternoon while searching for new music and really got a great vibe from him. I think it might have something to do with his British accent and his grungy, down to earth lyrics that make the melodies come alive through the speakers. Take a listen.

Madi Diaz is an artist I look forward to hearing much more of in 2010. In a way, her powerful and somewhat raspy voice reminds me of one of my favorite female artists, Missy Higgins. I think she really has found her musical identity without compromising her audience to songs that simply sell records for their mass appeal.

When I was looking for a music video to share with you I was really excited to a find this extended performance of hers. The List: 1/15/10

When I decided to continue blogging in 2010, I anticipated several changes in the structure of the blog. Trying to avoid cutting back, it's been extremely difficult to write and post everyday while keeping things productive in my life and avoiding insanity. Guess which one has happened? I assume there is no one to really blame but myself with this one but I promise to be getting better!

In Thirty Minutes:

- I use this idea everyday - Keep a small notebook on hand everywhere you go. Use it jot down anything and everything you think of throughout the day. At night, sort out those thoughts and stay organized.

- Donate to the Haitian victims via the American Red Cross.

- Check out the awesome version of Lady Gaga's Poker Face below.

In an hour:

- Next time you find yourself home on a Friday night, pull out a drawer or bin and organize it while you watch television.

- Pick up your favorite novel from high school.

- Stay committed to the environment and attach power strips to your electronics.

In an Afternoon:

- Hold a Swap Party. Ask everyone to bring 5 - 10 gently used items they no longer want to exchange with friends.

- Get rid of the clutter on your computer desktop and hard drive and reorganize everything into folders

- Have a pile of magazines sitting in your room? Tear or clip out your favorite things and compile them into a binder. This way, everything you like is there and what you don't is gone.

Green Living: Tree House... More Like Tree Loft

I feel I'm notorious for linking articles from TreeHugger.com but that's mostly because they are just so awesome! But with all the crazy cool quizzes and surveys I've discussed before, I don't know if any of them were as cool as this.

Remember that feeling when you were a little kid about having a tree house in your backyard? While I didn't have a tree large enough at my house, I remember the days thinking about exactly what it would look like and all the great adventures I would have in it. Designer Nicko Bjorn Elliot created this amazing dream tree house with a super modern twist. This is definitely one cool tree loft you've got to see!

Book of the Month: Now Is the Time

You may have noticed last week I posted on the side bar a new Book of the Month entitled Now Is the Time: 170 Ways to Seize the Moment by Patrick Lindsey. (Follow the link to purchase your copy!) I received this book as a gift last month and since I opened it I've been really inspired by many of the tips. For example page 33.

Now is the time to... Unleash Your Imagination

Artist of the Week: Fleet Foxes

While I'm not very familiar with these guys, Fleet Foxes has really captivated my attention. Not only do I really enjoy their approach to music and simplistic verse but the fact that they can make claymation cool is enough to keep me hooked.

Unfortunately I've had a really busy day today with my RA job as I am back for another semester at school. But while that has taken up most of my time I wanted to make it up to you with an interview from the guys of Fleet Foxes. Hope you like it!

Their video for White Winter Hymnal is not only a testament to their great sound but also their visionary work as artists. This video is truly one of the most original I've seen; especially since I started featuring them over the last year. Have You Heard?! The Music of Schuyler Fisk

So today's post is gonna start out with a short story. A few weeks back, I was talking with a friend about his taste in music and quickly discovered he too was a big fan of jazz and folk music. After a quick discussion, we began swapping favorite artists and sharing some of out favorite bands and songs with one another. While I had heard of quite a few of the folk artists (and almost none of the new jazz artists... disappointing I know) he introduced me to Schuyler Fisk.

Last January she released her latest album titled The Good Stuff and I have to agree, it's not too shabby. She most recently did a duet, Paperweight, with one of my favorite artists, Joshua Radin and it's a great example of her style of music; laid back guitar with a singer/songwriter vibe.

Artist of the Week: Rosi Golan

I don't know what the weather is like by you but here in Florida it is COLD! I know what you're thinking. 'Come on Mike, really? You think Florida is cold?!' But that's exactly what I'm saying; with the lows in the 30s this week it's a little nippy to say the least. I am trying to make the most of it, though. Layering under several blankets, making lots of hot drinks and of course, listening to some great music.

I've discussed many times how I think music can manipulate how you view your surroundings and how your surroundings can dictate what song you choose to play. One of the greatest examples of this is during the seasonal changes. I really like jazz and acoustic guitar music in the fall and traditional carols in the winter. But right around this time, days after the new year begins, I find the music I choose is instrumental to my outlook on the preceding year. (No pun intended!)

This year I've been drawn to two different genres: folk and electronica. Not really in the same ballpark, I'm aware, but there is something so unique about each and I'm excited to see where it takes me for the next 12 months. It's really like being told my fortune... I have no clue what will come of it but we shall see. Who knows, I might just fall in love with rap music. (Don't worry. I really DOUBT that will happen!)

In the mean time, I wanted to talk with you a little about Rosi Golan. Falling under the folk category, I feel like she has a slightly different sound than your run of the mill singer-songwriter. After a while, hearing the same voice from numerous different women does get a bit old, even if they all do sound excellent. With Rosi, I feel there is a realness achieved in her music and vocals unlike many of her peers. Take a listen to Been a Long Day or Lullaby and I think you'll agree. Unfortunately, a lot of her music is not featured this week in the Artist of the Week Player because the site I use does not have access to most of it. However, if you visit both her website and/or MySpace, you can stream some of her best work.

Rosi Golan is a singer-songwriter originally from Israel but relocated to Los Angeles at the age of nine. Working with such talented artists like Ben's Brother and William Fitzsimmons, like in this live performance of Hazy which is posted below, she quickly gained my attention. Plus, and this was totally unplanned, she was just featured on last night's episode of my favorite show, Brothers & Sisters. (If you haven't watched it or you aren't familiar with the show, you MUST check it out!) I think you guys are really gonna like her stuff.

It's Been One Year...

One year ago today I made a commitment to myself, a resolution if you will, to blog every weekday for an entire year. I blogged my thoughts in this post on 1/1/09 and with a year under my belt, I am extremely happy to say I've maintained my commitment. There were times of great personal victories, and others where I should have worked a little harder but in the end, everything worked out better than I could have hoped for. I can't believe I am here one year later blogging in this state of deja vu but none of us can predict the future, right?

I hope you had a wonderful New Year's celebration last night and continue the party through the weekend. Whether you're just waking up or have already been to the gym and back, take a minute and really evaluate your life and be grateful for what you have. Start the year off in the right direction. Contemplate your resolutions and make them so you can keep them. An attainable goal is much more satisfying than an outlandish one.

I hope your plans for the upcoming year are as big as mine are. Expect big things to come on SINdicated. I'm really excited about the next 12 months right here and I'm so happy you continue to follow me on this blogging journey.

With tomorrow being the last day of 2009, I thought I would take a look back at all the great artists I've blogged about over the last 52 weeks. Now I won't lie, I can't begin to tell you how many occasions over the last year I've questioned whether or not I had discussed a particular artist on the blog. So while I was trying to think of how to do a wrap up for the year, I thought I might make a list of all the artists for my own personal use, but that just seemed too boring. So then I thought, how could I make the reminiscing a little more exciting? And then it hit me; an iMix.

Artist of the Year: The Script

When I was thinking about who I would name as my favorite artist or band of the year, I was surprised how very little time it took. I mulled over numerous artists like Jason Reeves, James Morrison, Ingrid Michaelson, and Fink just to name a few. But out of all the acts I've featured, there is one band which I feel really shined in 2009. That band is known as The Script.

When I featured them here as my Artist of the Week way back in April, I knew they would gain a following in the US simply because of their fresh take on alternative/rock. But to say I guessed they would take off as strong as they did would be an out right lie. I am so happy for the guys and wish them all the best in 2010. Keep the music coming, boys!

Music Video Monday: 09' Favorites

I cannot believe this is the final week of 2009. A year ago, I would never have expected my life to be where it is today, not to mention everything that I've accomplished over the the last 12 months. It is truly amazing. So while I was reminiscing, I thought it might be nice to take a look back at the last year's music videos and show you my top three favorites. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I have. And continue to look back all week long as I rewind 2009 with a look back at my favorite posts.

Our first video goes all the way back to the very beginning of the year. I brought you Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie back in January and to this day, it's not only one of my favorite videos but it's also one of my favorite songs of the year.

My second favorite video of the year is titled Dark Blue by Jack's Mannequin. While I posted the song in August, this one actually takes me back to my days as a sophomore and junior year in high school. It's a great one to sing at the top of your lungs anytime, anywhere.

And my final favorite of 2009 is by my new favorite artist, Fink. I discovered This is the Thing a few months back and fell in love with it in November when I showed it here. The song really wraps up my year and is one I will never grow tired of hearing. Take a listen and you'll hear why.

So I'm guessing by this time you're probably baking something in the oven and have the sounds of classic holiday music playing in the background. But whether or not it's snowing in your neck of the country, I hope this weekend is filled laughter, joy, and lots of good eats. I know mine will be!

I would also like to thank all the daily readers out there who have been by my side this past year. (Can you believe I actually kept my resolution to blog everyday?!) It's pretty remarkable how this blog has evolved over the last year and I can't wait to share with you all my exciting plans for 2010.
